When we moved to Miami, we moved from a bigger house to a smaller house with less storage. We have been working for more than a year to try to reduce the amount of things we have so we fit into our house (because, really, there is no reason we shouldn't fit in the size house we own - it's not like we moved into an efficiency apartment). We haven't gotten there yet, but we're working on it.

Well, now that the baby is coming in just over a month (I hope she holds out until her due date), it is more important to get really serious about getting rid of the excess. I don't know if you guys know this, but babies come with a lot of stuff!!! We definitely need to get rid of our extra stuff or we will never fit all of the things for the baby. So, we are making runs to Goodwill and throwing away things that are not good enough to donate.

Another part of our mission is to digitize things so we can get rid of paper. We are taking all of our old printed pictures and having them digitized. I'm also working on going through all of my beading magazines and scanning the projects I like and want to attempt. Each magazine is small, but when you take 100s of them together, they take up a lot of space. And, I don't like to throw them away... because, you know, I never know when I'll want to create that one project I saw once. So, now I'll be spending hours next to our scanner with a pile of magazines scanning and organizing all the projects and techniques I'm interested in keeping. The next time my renewal comes up, I think I may go with the digital version of the magazines because it takes out the middle step of scanning the articles I want to keep... but, I must say I will miss flipping through the magazines when they come in the mail.

Our mission will take more than a little organizing and digitizing, but I can't wait to get rid of the extra stuff. It's difficult to make the decisions to get rid of things, but there is something freeing about losing the clutter. I hope to get to the point where we can live a minimalist life. Any organization and clearing out techniques are definitely welcome. The fact that this project has been going on for so long illustrates the fact that I can use some help :)Kellhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05237684410834132929noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3531940185316600923.post-22888143088911838282012-01-01T14:09:00.000-08:002012-01-01T14:09:29.644-08:00Move Over 2011... Here Comes 2012!!!So, at the end of 2010 I made a list of goals (resolutions) I hoped to accomplish in 2011. The only thing I can say is that if I am measured only on how well I attained my 2011 goals, I would have to think of myself as an epic failure. However, my life changed drastically in 2011. Early in the year, I found out I was pregnant (I'm due in February -- wish me luck). This affected me in many ways -- exhaustion like I have never experienced before, lethargy, a lack of focus and ambition, single-mindedness, etc. In many ways, becoming pregnant explains a lot of the resolutions I failed to meet: a lot of my fitness resolutions were put to the side because making it through the day was difficult enough, the same can be said for my jewelry making resolutions. However, I was able to meet one important resolution (maybe the most important resolution) -- I found an awesome job I really enjoy and am proud of. It takes a lot of time and is often stressful, but it's great and I love what I do!

So, after reaching only one of my 2011 resolutions, I'm questioning whether or not I should even bother making resolutions this year. However, I'm going to be optimistic. But, I think I will make a different kind of resolution. So, let's see how I hope my 2012 will turn out:

Run 500 miles in 2012. A lot of my friends are doing a 1000 mile challenge in 2012. However, I think that would be a bit much for me since I will have a baby in February. Losing 2 months of training time for the year on top of being out of shape from being pregnant could completely sabotage the 1000 miles goal... so, for me it will be 500 miles instead.

Get back to being creative. Make time to bead every week. It doesn't matter if it is a large project or a small project, but I need to get back to making jewelry.

Blog... not because I have an arbitrary number of posts I need to meet, but because I have things to share. "Speak" when I have something to say.

Focus on being a good mom. I've never been a mom, so I have a lot to learn. I just hope I will be good at it. I will need more patience than I have ever had, and I hope I am able to find the traits I need in order to be a good mother.

Good luck to everyone in 2012. If you make resolutions, may you find the tools and energy you need to meet them. If you don't make resolutions, then may you have a great 2012. And, to everyone, may 2012 be your best year yet. I think I'm going to need to hang on tight. I have a feeling this year will be a bumpy ride!Kellhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05237684410834132929noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3531940185316600923.post-5938936326284935762011-08-14T08:21:00.000-07:002011-08-14T08:21:19.252-07:00Where Have I Been? Am I Back?I don't know.... I started 2011 with great ambition. I was ready to fight for a really great year. I was going to start selling jewelry and blogging religiously. I was going to lose weight and get into shape. I'm not really sure what happened between January and now.

Life has simply gotten away from me. I got a new job in February, and I absolutely love it. I work for three amazing women who own their own company. I have the flexibility to build the training program the way I want it to be, and I make a difference in the company. So, on a professional level, I am right where I am supposed to be.

My personal life is great too. I'm happy and enjoy the point I'm at in my life. There have been a couple of big changes in my personal life, but they didn't stop me from making jewelry and blogging. So, I'm not sure what happened or where I've been. I'm not sure whether I'm back for good, but I hope I am. I hope I'm going to be able to make some amazing jewelry and get my jewelry making back on track. I really really really want to win it... which is why I'm not sure I really want to share it. If I share it, it gives me more competition. But, luckily (for you anyway), I decided to share. So check out all the amazing beads in this giveaway from the Art Bead Scene blog.

The giveaway is in honor of Bead 2011 which is presented by Beadwork Magazine. Erin contacted as many of the artists in Bead 2011 as she could and asked her to contribute to the giveaway. And, boy did they respond. Check out her blog post for complete details about the giveaway and instructions for entering.

Here are a FEW of the beads I am drooling over at the moment. There are far more included in the giveaway... these are just my personal favorites!
I was to select any type and style of beads in a color pallette that reminded me of fall. The beads didn't have to be in a traditional fall color scheme. They just had to remind me of fall. Well, I selected my beads right away... and that was the last thing I did right away. I fell into the end-of-the-semester trap and became caught up in papers, research, teaching, writing finals, taking finals, and ran out of time for beading. Then, I left school and had to look for a job... which became more than a full time job on its own. When I finally found a job, I actually ended up with more jobs than I could handle. So, I am just now showing off my fall piece.

I wanted to try something different than my usual style, but I still wanted to use seed beads because they are my favorite. I also wanted to work with some of the fabulous pendants offered by Artbeads.com. I ended up ordering seed beads in six different luscious fall colors. I also ordered a copper leaf pendant and a gorgeous olive green porcelain pendant. Initially I planned to attempt bead embroidery around the pendants to create a bib-style necklace. However, that is not where my muse took me. My muse decided that I was going to use some silver rings I already had and create some rings out of seed beads to create a custom chain.

I decided to keep the piece simple and hang both pendants from the front of the chain. I then used a claw clasp and created the closure in the front so I wouldn't disrupt the flow of the chain. The piece is incredibly simple and comfortable, but it took a LONG time to make. Each beaded ring took an hour or so to create (that's probably slower than it has to be, but I'm still new at creating them).

I really like the way the necklace turned out. It is very simple, which suits me. I've worn it a couple of times. The first time, it was a bit stiff. However, it was really comfortable in later wearings. It loosened up and lays really well.

I hope you enjoy the necklace and my interpretation of fall. My knowledge of fall comes from my childhood in upstate NY where autumn was filled with crisp cool air, piles of scarlet, orange, yellow, and brown leaves as tall as I was, apple cider, and soccer. To me, this necklace represents my childhood and my favorite time of the year!
I know I just wrote a post with updates about my New Year's Resolutions... but I thought this warranted an update to the update.

I just found out that I got the job I really really really wanted. I start on Wednesday, and I can't wait. I'm going to be the Corporate Trainer for BCA Financial Services. I'll be able to design and develop instruction as well as teach. It's everything I like doing mixed together!

Yeah for dream jobs and for things working out!

Here are the goals I set and my progress toward each:

Find a good job. After leaving school, I am not bringing in any money. I have to find a job, and I need to do it quickly. I've put in a lot of applications and I'm hopeful. Hopefully, this is a January resolution instead of a year long resolution.
So far, I haven't found a job. However, I've had two really good interviews. Both are for good jobs that I would love to have! I should find out whether or not I was selected for the first job sometime this week, and I have a second interview for the second job this week. The waiting is killing me. In some ways it is good because I can still hold out hope that I'll get one of the jobs... but in other ways, it's bad because I am so excited about the prospect of getting one of the jobs that I just want to be told that I have it. I guess the good/bad ratio depends on whether I get either job. If I get one, then I hate the wait. If I don't get one, then I will want to go back to the waiting period where I still had hope.

Run a half marathon. I completed my first half marathon in 2010, but I didn't run the entire thing. I had to walk quite a bit. This year, I want to run all 13.1 miles.
No half marathons yet. In fact, I haven't worked very hard on my training for it... however, that all changes today. I'm starting to eat right and train today. It's time! Hopefully, at the end of next month I'll be able to report that I've made progress toward my goal!

Run a marathon. My husband and I have decided to sign up for a full marathon after we complete our half marathon, and I want to run the entire thing.
Same as the previous... nothing to report yet... but everything changes today!

Start selling my jewelry. I've decided to take another leap this year. I'm going to try to believe in myself and start up an etsy store and sell my jewelry. I'm also going to contact some local bridal stores and see if they will carry some of my jewelry. I'm hoping to start taking custom bridal/wedding party/ bridesmaid gift orders.
I haven't started selling yet. I still need to figure out some tax and other business type things. However, I've been working on making jewelry and trying new techniques so that I have something to list when I open my store. I think I will try to create a jewelry catalog this month so that I have something to show bridal stores when I talk to them!

Blog at least 4 times a week. In 2010, my blogging was spurradic. I had months where I blogged a lot, and other months where I hardly blogged at all. In 2011, I want to make sure I blog at least 4 times each week. I also want to improve the photos I take for the blog.
Well, I think this is my 12th blog for January, so that is not quite four times a week... but a lot better than last year. I'll try to increase to my goal next month and keep up the blogging all week long. But, I'm happy with 12 blogs this month. It's a pretty good improvement. I just have to work to get even better!

Learn to make glass beads. My wonderful husband bought me a lampwork bead making kit for Christmas, and I can't wait to try it out. I have wanted to learn to make glass beads for awhile and want to jump in and do it this year.
I haven't set up an area where I can work on making glass beads yet. I also need to purchase the correct eye protection. It's still going to happen this year... just not in January.

Get back in shape. The last few years have been difficult on me. I've dealt with depression, anxiety, and my father's suicide. I let my workout routine get away from me. I want to start working out regularly and get myself back. I think it will improve my confidence and make me feel better all around.
This one is the one I'm the sorriest about not working on yet. It's so easy to put it off for a day... every day. Then, at the end of the month you haven't done anything. Today that changes. I've taken out my work out log/ food journal and I'm going to hold myself accountable. February is going to be a great month! I'm ready now.

So, as you can see, I haven't made much progress toward my resolutions. But, I'm trying not to be too hard on myself. I have the whole year to accomplish these things. I'm re-evaluating and figuring out what I need to change to make them happen going forward! Right now, the most important thing is finding a job, so I'm putting a lot of time ad energy into finding a job... but that doesn't mean I can't work on the other things at the same time.
It was a very sad occassion, but it was also a celebration of a man who lived an amazing 90 years. He was a hard working and smart husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, and friend. The world has lost a great man.

However, while in Maine, I was able to visit one of my favorite bead stores: The Beadin' Path. Boy, was it overwhelming. I just kept looking and looking... and of course, I wanted one of everything. However, after a couple of hours, I was able to narrow my selections down to a few strands of lucite beads, and some vials of seed beads.

For my lucite beads, I picked some clear aqua colored starfish beads that are drilled from the top to the bottom. I also selected some GORGEOUS dark blue matte flower beads. I can't wait to make some earrings, rings, bracelets, and necklaces with these beads. I have about 1000 ideas floating through my head. Hopefully I can bring all of them to life!

I also selected 5 vials of seed beads (is anyone surprised, with my love of seed beads?). I picked 4 vials of size 11/0 beads and one vial of 15/0 beads. I picked a gorgeous wintry pallet (maybe it's due to the snow that was all around me in Maine). The beads are gorgeous and opaly looking. I have a great idea for how I will use them, but I'm not going to give any hints for now except that it is inspired by my fall piece for the Artbeads.com bead blogger program (which is almost done. I will post pics of this necklace soon).

Well, it was the right size, and the beads did fall correctly... and I was hooked. I wanted one of my own.

Luckily, I'd ordered a bunch of dog themed charms (puppies are one of my favorite things in the world!) that I hadn't used yet. I paired the charms with beads of my favorite color -- blue -- and a gorgeous clasp with blue swarovski crystals in it.

I think it turned out great. What do you think?
They changed from a program where they had a specific list of bloggers with whom they worked to a new program where they select a group of bloggers from everyone who wants to participate. Well, under the new program, I was picked... and I recently received a really cool selection of beads and findings!!!

Check out the awesome stash they sent:

I haven't worked with resin before, but I plan to add some steampunk-style components to it. Maybe some gears and springs or some different colors of wire. I'm really excited to try my hand at a new medium. One of the blanks is deeper and has a ruffled edge, and the other is shallower. I think I will put an image in the shallower one, then use resin to enclose it!

Who doesn't like a little sparkle... and, it's my favorite color!!! I think it will make a great hanging charm next to a clasp on a simple bracelet or necklace. It will add just the right "wow" factor.

It's absolutely gorgeous and has a little weight to it (which is perfect for Santa, right!?!?!). I can't wait to use it, but I think I will hold on to it until it is a little closer to the Holiday season. I think he might make an appearance as an ornament. He'd look great with some red, green, and white swarovski crystals!

Just look at the texture and colors in these beads. I don't know what I'll make with them (but, I'm definitely taking suggestions), but I can't wait to use them. They will make an AMAZING piece of jewelry. Anything they touch will be beautiful!

They also generously included this gorgeous butterfly focal. I am absolutely in love with butterflies right now, so this was an amazing inclusion. I picture this focal as the centerpiece of a multi-strand bracelet. I think it deserves to be coupled with small wooden beads with some bright purple beads thrown in to brighten up the piece. I'm not sure how I will incorporate the focal in the multiple strands, but I do know it will be amazing when it's done. I can already picture it in my head. I just have to figure out how to put the pieces all together.

I love these whimsical lampwork glass frog beads. They are adorable and colorful, and just make me happy to look at. I love the colors and spots on them. They are the perfect size for just about anything. I've already made the cutest pair of earrings with them. In the news, we hear about all of the bad in people. We hear about robberies, scams, murders, car accidents, etc... Today, I want to share a story about kindness; about the good in people.

On December 18, Amy of Spyder Jewels hosted a beaded ornament giveaway. I had been following her blog as she created more and more amazing ornaments, and was drooling with desire, so I entered (you should really check her blog out. She does things with seed beads that I can only dream of doing!). After never winning a giveaway, I actually won this one! I waited excitedly for my ornament to arrive (I even got to pick the colors and what style I wanted).

Then, unfortunately, I had to leave town suddenly for a family emergency. When I returned home, there was a HUGE box waiting for me! When I opened it, the most gorgeous ornament in the world was inside

That was enough to make my day, my week, my month... you get the picture. But, as I said, it was a HUGE box. There was more inside. She had included the book Enchanted Adornments and a HUGE lot of beads for me as well. I almost cried because I was so touched by her generosity.

I have so many great ideas, and I want to start them all... so I do. Now, I have a bunch of started projects and no finished projects for the new year. Every time I get involved in a project, I get bored and want to switch to something else.

Is anyone else feeling as scattered as I am? Is this new year difficult or is it just me? Boy, I usually don't have a lot of focus, but I have more than this.Kellhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05237684410834132929noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3531940185316600923.post-2382332882725675662011-01-04T13:37:00.000-08:002011-01-04T13:38:27.408-08:00Do You Want to Join the Sisterhood of the Travelling Beads?!?!?!?!Okay, if you've ever seen the sisterhood of the travelling pants, you know the premise is that 4 friends share a pair of pants that magically fit all of them... Well, this is about a bazillion times better.

The sisterhood of the travelling beads is a group of artists who are sharing a HUGE (let me say it one more time... HUGE) box of beads with one another. The beads travel to one sister at a time. While with the sister, she can take out any beads she wants as long as she replaces them with beads of equal value. She is then responsible for holding a drawing to identify the next sister and send the box to her.

Why is this better than the sisterhood of the travelling pants? Well, first, it's BEADS!!! And, I don't know about you, but I like beads way better than jeans. Second, you get to keep some of what you find. Third, you get to meet and network with some awesome artists who you may not yet know. Fourth, the included beads are worth more than $400!?!?!?!? Can you imagine $400 worth of beads showing up at your door for you to oogle?

The current sister is the lovely and talented Cindy Gimbrome AKA the Lampwork Diva. For more information about becoming the next sister, check out her blog. As I said, she is lovely and talented, so you should also check out her website full of beautiful glass pieces.

If you like beads, you should definitely check out the sisterhood. It's a great way to meet other creative minds, get some awesome new beads, and destash your own beads!Kellhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05237684410834132929noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3531940185316600923.post-67432285928089750002011-01-03T19:44:00.000-08:002011-01-03T19:45:28.794-08:00Christmas Gifts -- Revealed
Between the end of the semester and Christmas, I was busy creating jewelry for friends and family. however, I haven't displayed the pieces here because not everyone had received their gifts (yeah... I finished the pieces in plenty of time, But somehow I just couldn't get myself to deal with the crowds at the post office pre-Christmas). So, here is a peek at the handmade pieces I gifted for Christmas. I hope you enjoy them!

I don't usually create things that are so "girly" because I'm a bit of a tom-boy, but she's a girlie-girl and I really wanted to make something she would like and wear. I don't know if she likes pink and purple, but the piece seemed to suit her, and it just kind of came to me. I bought the charms a while ago because I really liked them, but then I never found a way to use them. Somehow everything fell together into this really cute charm bracelet. The earrings were created using a chandelier finding and attaching Swarovski crystals to it. I know she received the pieces the other day, and I hope she liked them!

I wore a similar necklace (in red) to a concert we both attended and she really liked it. I decided to create one of her own for her. She really likes black, white, and grey so that is the color pallet I stuck with. To give it a little "wow" factor, I added some smoky grey crystals and the lucite beads with a vintage pattern printed on them. I haven't given it to her yet, but she saw pictures of it and I know she likes it!
Kellhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05237684410834132929noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3531940185316600923.post-64841659252979089782011-01-01T21:55:00.000-08:002011-01-01T21:55:42.084-08:00Inspiration

The blogs I like the best and enjoy the most are ones that are not solely dedicated to beading. I like to feel like I know the people who write the blogs. I want to feel like a friend or confidante. The other thing I realized is that although that is what I like, I rarely let people in. I don't really let out many personal details. I write a lot without ever really saying much of everything. So, here is an attempt on my part to introduce myself... to become more of a person and friend and less of a automaton.

Right now, I'm unemployed. That's hard for me to admit. I am a very type A personality. I want to be perfect and admitting failure is difficult for me. But, I failed... there it is. I took a huge leap, and it backfired on me. I applied to and was accepted to work on my PhD in Chemistry. I left my stable job and went for it... but after 10 years away, I just didn't have it anymore. I try to candy coat it, but plain and simple, I failed.

It's easy to hurt me. I pretend to be tough, but my confidence is very fragile. It doesn't take much to break it. I believe in people and let them into my heart... and often they don't deserve it. I pretend I don't care what they think, but opinions matter.

I have created an AMAZING family for myself. The family I was given hasn't been very good to me, but I have made my own family that is beyond belief. I have a husband who I love more than the world itself. His entire family has accepted me as if I was part of their family rather than an "in-law". They often call me their sister/neice/daughter rather than -in law. I also have great friends whom I consider family. Although my PhD career was short lived, I met the most amazing group of friends. It was like "love at first sight" except with friends instead of romance. I immediately clicked with each of my friends and felt like I fit in. I've never found a group that I truly belonged to... until this group. I call us orphans because we are all far from our families. Now we are our own family.

I love animals more than just about anything in the world. It hurts my heart to even think of an animal being harmed... to the point that it will bring me to tears. I think of animals the same way I think of people... and if animals aren't cherished, I become very upset. I hate seeing dogs chained up outside without food or water, I hate the way show animals are treated, I want to cry when I think of a dog being lost... I think animals are people.

I don't know what I want to be when I grow up. When you are 5, it's easy to believe you can be anything. When you are 30, its a little harder. I want to find something I'm really good at, but I'm really average at a lot of things... and that makes it hard to find your calling. Despite not knowing where my future is, I'm still searching and trying things out. I haven't given up hope. 30 isn't that old... I still have a lot of good years to find my passion and follow it.

I love to travel. I didn't really travel until I was 25, but I warmed up to it quickly. In the last 5 or 6 years, I've been to Belize, Italy, Greece, Australia, China, Malaysia, Thailand, Fiji, Yap, Palau, Pohnpei, and Hong Kong. So far, my favorite place is Sydney, Australia, but I can't wait to find a new favorite place. My next trip will be to Africa. I want to visit Cairo and see the pyramids... then, travel to the south and go on a safari!

Well, that's all for now. I will try to include some anecdotes and personal information in all my future posts so I don't become one of those bloggers who only wants to promote her business.

Oh, yeah, in an attempt to open up a little more, here is a picture of the "real" me at the Great Wall.
My husband and I moved from Guam to Miami, FL and picked up our gorgeous doggy who had been living with her grandparents for 3 years while we were in Guam. I also took a huge leap when I left my stable job to go back to school to work on my PhD in chemistry. I met some wonderful people and made amazing new friends this year. I also dealt with devastation as I struggled with leaving school because I just wasn't at the same point in my life as I was 10 years earlier. Despite its highs and lows, I think 2010 was a success. Looking toward 2011, I have a lot of decisions to make... so, here are my resolutions for 2011.

Find a good job. After leaving school, I am not bringing in any money. I have to find a job, and I need to do it quickly. I've put in a lot of applications and I'm hopeful. Hopefully, this is a January resolution instead of a year long resolution.

Run a half marathon. I completed my first half marathon in 2010, but I didn't run the entire thing. I had to walk quite a bit. This year, I want to run all 13.1 miles.

Run a marathon. My husband and I have decided to sign up for a full marathon after we complete our half marathon, and I want to run the entire thing.

Blog at least 4 times a week. In 2010, my blogging was spurradic. I had months where I blogged a lot, and other months where I hardly blogged at all. In 2011, I want to make sure I blog at least 4 times each week. I also want to improve the photos I take for the blog.

Learn to make glass beads. My wonderful husband bought me a lampwork bead making kit for Christmas, and I can't wait to try it out. I have wanted to learn to make glass beads for awhile and want to jump in and do it this year.

Get back in shape. The last few years have been difficult on me. I've dealt with depression, anxiety, and my father's suicide. I let my workout routine get away from me. I want to start working out regularly and get myself back. I think it will improve my confidence and make me feel better all around.

So, tell me, what are your goals for the new year? Are you making resolutions? How will you hold yourself accountable and make sure you achieve your goals?

I plan to check in on a monthly basis and review my progress toward my goals. Hopefully you will all help hold me accountable for my goals! Happy New Year!!! Here's to an amazing 2011. You hold the power. Make it wonderful!

I leave you with a picture of my gorgeous doggie, Bailey (do you believe she's 7 years old?):
A craft supplier/distributor went out of business and had five warehouses full of supplies to sell. It was awesome. There were pliers, wire, beads, bracelet forms, findings, and more.

We started our day at about 9:30 am with a walkthrough of the merchandise. We looked at everything and made a list of the items we were interested in. At 11:00 am, we started getting excited because it was time for the auction to start. By 12:00 pm, we were frustrated because the auction still hadn't started. Finally, the auctioneer started the auction and we were rolling. They started by asking if anyone was interested in buying the entire lot. There was a bid for $35,000 for everything (easily over $1,000,000 worth of merchandise). The auctioneer did not want to accept the bid, so the individual lots went up for sale.

We bid on a couple of things, and even won a few (glass beads, seed beads, wire, and copper findings). Then, the "big boys" started bidding. The auctioneer started bundling things in huge lots (like selling 6 pallets of stuff at one time). At this point, the hubby and I were pretty much out of the bidding. Even though we could afford the pallets, where on earth would we put 6 pallets of stuff? Just before we left, the auctioneer decided to call off the auction and sell everything to the first bidder for the $35,000 he offered at the beginning.

The result of the day was a roller coaster of emotion: excitement, frustration, anticipation, excitement (again), frustration (again), and finally disappointment. We were happy with the items we won (although there were a couple of things we would have liked to win... and a couple of things we wanted to bid on, but they were placed in large bulk lots, so we would have needed to purchase 6 pallets to get the one case of things we wanted). We wanted to take our things home... but at the end, nothing was for sale. We went home with nothing to show for our day. Overall, I think it was fun... but, I still want my things!Kellhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05237684410834132929noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3531940185316600923.post-55020997995517916712010-12-28T08:19:00.000-08:002010-12-28T08:41:18.922-08:00Beautiful Beads from Artbeads.comI'm a little behind in my bead blogging. I'm just now blogging about the beads I received from Artbeads.com as part of the fall bead bloggers program. I became overwhelmed by grading, writing finals, studying for and taking finals, and writing papers. Boy, school is harder than I remember it being. Anyway, I finally have a little time. For the fall installment of the Artbeads.com bead blogger program, I was instructed to select beads that bring about the feeling of fall through color. I decided to stick with a traditional fall color pallet of browns, reds, oranges, and olive greens. Check out these luscious delica seed beads in all the colors of fall:

In addition to the gorgeous seed beads, I also selected a couple of fall-themed pendants. The first pendant is a gorgeous copper leaf. I grew up in upstate New York and the leaves are the most beautiful part of the fall season. When I saw this pendant, I couldn't help myself. It really brought out my memories of fall.

The second pendant is a beautiful porcelain pendant in an olive green color with a black tree on it. Again, I just couldn't help myself when I saw it. Everything from the color to the subject matter just felt like fall to me.

I have a really cool vision for the piece. It, of course, includes a lot of beadweaving. If it turns out the way I want, It will be different than the other pieces I've created. Check back for a look at the fall necklace I'm going to create.
The point of the contest is to show a picture of your inspiration and a picture of the piece of jewelry you created based on the inspiration. I entered the contest, and would love it if you would support me by voting for the piece of jewelry I created. If you would like to vote for me, please click here and press the vote button. If you like my piece, please also consider sharing the website to vote for me with your followers, friends, and family members. I'm a poor college student and could really use the bead money!!!

My inspiration was this picture by Beverly Ash Gilbert. I found it on her blog and was immediately inspired to create the necklace.

I was inspired by the beautiful earthy colors and the shadow form of the grasses. I used the colors as the basis for the colors in the necklace. I used the inspiration of the shadow form to create a black tree against the colored background. I used a free form beadweaving technique to create the necklace and the pendant. In the center of the pendant, there is a large green venetian glass bead.

I think the necklace definitely resembles the photo, without copying it exactly. If you agree, please take a moment and vote for my necklace!

Thank you for your love and support!
It's been a dream of mine since I finished my undergraduate degree (9 years ago). I'm just getting around to it now, and am really excited to be taking steps to accomplish my goal. However, 9 years is a really long time to be out of school. I've forgotten more than a lot of people know about chemistry. I'm trying to get back into the swing of school, but it's hard when you have to learn all of the class material and re-learn all the information you've forgotten.

On top of class work, I'm also teaching two lab sections. I love the teaching part, and my students are really awesome... but the grading takes HOURS. That takes away from the time I can spend studying and re-learning everything I need to know.

As if I don't already have enough stress, I just selected my research group and advisor. I'm really excited about my research project, and I think I'll be able to make real progress during my time at FIU. However, I am now spending hourse each week doing lit searches and reading articles I don't really understand (then spending even more hours trying to figure out all the words/topics I don't understand so I can re-read the article and hopefully understand the article). I'm also trying to learn how to use all the equipment in the lab (I just found out I'm in charge of maintaining all the equipment in the lab... and I don't yet know how to use it) and how to conduct polymerizations and simple synthesis' which are skills I need to master before starting work on my project.

I love what I'm doing, but I'm terrified. I'm terrified that I'm not smart enough to be a PhD chemist. I'm terrified that I'm not as good at this stuff as I thought. I'm terrified that I'm going to fail and have to tell everyone that I couldn't cut it. I'm just terrified... all the time. I want to cry. But, instead I smile and pretend everything is going well. In front of my students, I act like the authority on everything dealing with Chemistry. In front of the other students, I pretend like everything is going well and I'm as smart as them. But inside I'm wondering if they will still like me if I fail out after one semester. I'm wondering whaty my husband will think of me if I fail out. I'm worried about the economic impact on my family if I can't make it.

It's really hard to step out of your comfort zone. When you find something that you do easily (for me, it was instructional design), it is easy to become complacent. It becomes easy to just do that thing and make the money you need and just settle. I didn't want to just settle, so I jumped... without a net... and it's terrifying. I hope I catch the bar. The alternative (a big messy splotch on the ground below) isn't an option. So, I will continue to be brave. I will continue to reach for that bar. All I need is to get my finger tips around it... no fancy flips... just get my fingers around the bar. In the future, I'll work up to flips and twists. In the future, I will do more than just hold on... but for now, I just need to not fail.

Here's to everyone who has jumped. Here's to everyone who has been terrified, but has continued to try. Bravo to you. It is not easy. You are to be commended for your heart, desire, hard work and dedication. No one can take your successes away from you. They are yours alone based on your hard work. Congratulations to you!Kellhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05237684410834132929noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3531940185316600923.post-62803665415739630792010-10-12T16:42:00.000-07:002010-10-12T16:44:44.493-07:00Birthday Earrings
As many of you know, I started working on my Chemistry PhD this fall. On my first day of school, I met these two awesome girls, Kelley and Michelle. Over the last 6 weeks, I've become pretty good friends with them. Over these few weeks, I've noticed that Michelle wears earrings almost every day. I made a mental note and tucked it away until I could act on it.

Well, Michelle's birthday is on Thursday... so I thought it was the perfect opportunity to make some earrings for her. When she came over to study for our Organic Chemistry exam, I took out all my beads and had her pick a few beads that she liked so I could create some birthday earrings for her (she knows she is getting earrings, but doesn't know what they will look like).

She gravitated toward my blue beads, so I decided to create some sweet dangle earrings using the blue beads and fish charms. My goal was to make it look like the fish were swimming in water. I then decided to create a second pair of earrings for her using different colors and sizes of pearls. Here's a peek at her birthday earrings (luckily she doesn't read my blog, so I can post pictures here).
